Still got questions about what we do? Here are some of the FAQs we get about Knit for Peace.
What is Knit for Peace?
We are a charity that provides outlets for knitters to donate their knitting to people in need. We also run a variety of campaigns to encourage knitting around the UK: providing marginalised people with knitting supplies and facilitating schools teaching children how to knit. In addition, we also run a retreat in Mysore, India, which is an opportunity to learn from an array of master knitters which over the years have included Jane Crowfoot and Debbie Bliss. You can read about us and how we got started here.
How can I donate my knitted goods?
In order to minimise our environmental impact and connect people with their local community, we are encouraging our knitters to donate their knitting locally where possible. We have an extensive list of charities who might be in need of warm clothing and blankets, which can be found here. Please always contact the organisation first to find out what items they require.
If you are unable to donate locally, we are still accepting knitting at our office in London. Our address is:
Radius Works,
Back Lane,
Hampstead,
London
NW3 1HL
Please include a knitted goods recording sheet with your parcel so that we know who has sent us what!
We’re very grateful for all donated items, but please be aware that we can’t cover the cost of postage. Thank you though for every stitch and every parcel you send our way.
What knitted items can I donate?
We only accept new, unworn, hand-made items. These can be knitted or crocheted.
If you are donating to a local organisation, please always check what items they require.
What items are the most needed?
We particularly need adult garments and large size blankets (up to 80 x 90inches). At the moment we have a lot of child hats, child jumpers/cardigans and baby blankets.
Do you accept odd balls of yarn, unfinished balls, needles and haberdashery?
Yes, we encourage knitting and regularly send yarn, needles, and haberdashery to help refugee camps, shelters, care homes, prisons and hospitals setup their own knitting groups. We also send to textile department of Arts Colleges to help students who can’t always afford all the materials needed for the course.
What is the best way to send items?
Posting with Royal Mail can become expensive especially when sending large quantities. Most of our knitters use courier companies such as DHL or Evri, which apparently are the cheapest.
Please note that we’re unable to cover postage costs for donated items, so we kindly ask donors to arrange and pay for postage themselves. Every penny we save on postage helps us put more support into the communities we work with - thank you so much for understanding.
Can I come and deliver my knitted items to Radius Works in person?
You are welcome to come and drop your knitting in person. The Knit for Peace office is open Tuesday to Thursday from 10am to 5pm.
We are based in Hampstead less than 2 minutes walk from Hampstead Tube Station on the Edgware Branch of the Northern Line.
If you are driving and have a large amount we recommend that you give us a call when you are about 5 minutes away so we can help you to unload. (Our office is based on a one way road system).
What are the different sizes for blankets?
Baby: 30 x 40 inches
Single: 66 x 90 inches
Double: 80 x 90 inches
Lap: 45 x 45 inches
